HONG KONG 30 May 2005 - Maintenance welders always come across the challenge of welding pipes. Especially while TIG welding stainless steel pipes or vessels, shielding of the back of the root pass with inert gas is a must. Without back shielding, the penetration at the root of the weld joint would be improper. The reverse side of the root run can also be easily oxidized when exposed to the atmosphere, due to chromium content of the weld metal.

To overcome this penetration and oxidation problem back shielding or purging with inert gases such as Argon or Helium, is normally resorted to. For a normal 10m long, 300 mm diameter pipe, pre-purge time at 24 LPM (litres per minute) ranges from 150 to 170 minutes. For this operation the overall additional costs per weld joint such as - inert gas consumption, setup time, labor and downtime - can be huge.

Unfavorable site conditions in refineries, power plants or chemical plants can only add to the complications and resultant costs, besides compromising the quality of the maintenance weld job.

MAGNA 39 FC TIG "RootGard" is the answer.

MAGNA 39 FC TIG "RootGard" is an innovative pipe welding solution as a flux-cored TIG rod for the most efficient, reliable and economical single-sided welding.

MAGNA 39 helps welders by eliminating the need for back shielding or purging with inert gas, thereby saving downtime, and all related setup costs in mainenance pipe welding.

The inner surface of the root pass can be shielded by MAGNA 39 during TIG welding against the destructive impact of atmospheric oxygen & nitrogen.

MAGNA 39 is an ideal in-situ maintenance welding formulation suitable for versatile applications in food & beverage industries, dairies, refineries, nuclear power plants, chemical or fertilizers plants, where stainless steels piping is commonly used.

"After months of research and market analysis, it was apparent that professional welders require a smarter wire to do the job - a filler wire that would weld a pipe successfully without all the burdensome setup and costly downtime," commented Mr. C.K. Leung, Sales & Marketing Manager, Global, Magna Industrial Co. Limited.

"MAGNA 39 FC TIG "RootGard" outperforms ordinary solid wire by its unique flux formulation contained inside a tubular stainless steel rod. This flux-cored molten slag technology enables a high quality bead on the face and reverse side of the root with a smooth, uniform ripple, without oxidation. It penetrates through the entire part of the pipe in all positions - creating excellent welds on single-sided weld joints," said Dr. Ricky Ho, Director, Technical Services Department, Magna Industrial Co. Limited.

"The introduction of MAGNA 39 FC TIG "RootGard" kicks off a new era of product development in MAGNA Welding Alloys. MAGNA 39 has been engineered and positioned based on our thorough understanding of the market and the actual needs in the field. We are confident that professional maintenance welders will welcome MAGNA 39 as their true partner in pipe repairs for industries like F&B, refineries, chemical, power or fertilizers plants," said Mr. Sudhir Sthalekar, Chief Executive & General Manager, Magna Industrial Co. Limited.
